Airius Fans Improves Comfort At Tamworth Sports Dome

The Dome includes seven indoor multi-purpose courts with ceiling heights ranging from 8–10 metres and hosts a wide range of activities including sport, social events and town meetings. Users of the Dome, especially players on the courts, reported the space felt extremely uncomfortable during summer due to inadequate airflow circulation, while also being too cold in the winter months. Occupants often experienced:

• Overheating and discomfort during warmer months due to insufficient air movement at court level and inadequate cooling comfort.
• Heated air rising and collecting at ceiling level rather than staying in the occupied zone during winter.
• Uneven comfort across the courts, creating hot and cold spots that impact users’ experience in the Dome.

These issues were impacting user comfort, effective air cooling and overall usability across seasons. This created an urgent requirement for Tamworth Council to implement an efficient, long-term solution to improve comfort without major building disruption.

Following a free site survey, Airius supplied 16 Emerald Series fan systems, installed across the venue’s four basketball courts, including the show court and three community courts.

The installation, carried out by Tamworth Council’s in-house electricians, improved comfort significantly without any structural disruption to the building.

Delivering powerful, controllable airflow, the Emerald Series improved conditions year-round:

• In summer, increased air movement across the courts improved cooling comfort for players and users.
• In winter, running the fans at low speed supports destratification, helping bring warmer high-level air back down to floor level to reduce chill and improve usable comfort.

A practical, unexpected bonus also emerged: airflow helped move loose dust and debris off the courts into small “dust bunnies,” supporting faster and easier court cleaning.

Feedback from users has been extremely positive. The Emerald Series installation delivered a noticeable improvement in day-to-day conditions across the indoor basketball courts, helping Tamworth Regional Council create a more comfortable, more usable environment through both summer and winter operation.
