Tackling Thermal Stratification at London Aquatics Centre

Like many large aquatic facilities, it was experiencing thermal stratification, with warm air rising to the high ceiling instead of staying in the occupied zone. This made it difficult to maintain comfortable temperatures at pool deck and spectator level, while also increasing heat loss and contributing to condensation.

The Challenge

Aquatic buildings are some of the most demanding environments for heating efficiency and comfort. At the London Aquatics Centre, heat was accumulating at ceiling level rather than staying in the occupied zone, making it difficult to maintain desired temperatures at floor level without excessive energy use. The increased ceiling temperature accelerated heat loss, compounding operating costs and contributing to condensation.

The Solution

To improve temperature balance and reduce HVAC load, 25 x Airius Model 60 Standard Series fans were specified and installed throughout the facility.

By continuously recirculating warm air from the ceiling back down to floor level, the Airius destratification system helps even out temperatures across the space, improving comfort for swimmers, spectators and staff while supporting more efficient HVAC operation.

The Outcome

Following installation, the London Aquatics Centre achieved measurable improvements in performance and operating costs:

  • 5 month ROI
  • Over £150,000 saved in heating costs over 14 months
  • Around 650 tonnes reduction in CO2 per annum
  • Significantly improved thermal comfort
  • Reduced condensation
